thoughtful thursday

I'm biting the bullet this week and reading/listening/watching Elder Russell M. Nelson's talk Face the Future with Faith.

I can not wait until my hard copy of conference gets here. Have I said that before?

Enough sulking. Onwards!

I love Elder Nelson's reference to the "cafeteria approach" of obedience (by the way, them/they is in reference to your children) :

Teach of faith to keep all the commandments of God, knowing that they are given to bless His children and bring them joy. 4 Warn them that they will encounter people who pick which commandments they will keep and ignore others that they choose to break. I call this the cafeteria approach to obedience. This practice of picking and choosing will not work. It will lead to misery. To prepare to meet God, one keeps all of His commandments. It takes faith to obey them, and keeping His commandments will strengthen that faith.

And his follow up comment confirms that it is well worth our best effort:

"Obedience allows God’s blessings to flow without constraint."

It's hard to debate that truth, so why is picking and choosing so difficult to avoid some days?

Don't answer that. It's what's called a rhetorical question.

As part of his closing he quotes Pres. Monson, which proves to be a real kicker. Read her and weep:

Our beloved President Thomas S. Monson has given us his prophetic witness. He said: “I testify to you that our promised blessings are beyond measure. Though the storm clouds may gather, though the rains may pour down upon us, our knowledge of the gospel and our love of our Heavenly Father and of our Savior will comfort and sustain us and bring joy to our hearts as we walk uprightly and keep the commandments.”

President Monson continued: “My beloved brothers and sisters, fear not. Be of good cheer. The future is as bright as your faith.”

Wasn't that a great on?! That quote by President Monson has been ringing in my ears ever since Conference. I needed that reminder that my future could still be bright even amidst a crazy and wicked world! Thanks for another reminder -
Happy Thursday!
